'How can I make a difference in such a troubled world? That's a question I often find myself asking. We can easily feel small and insignificant when the problems facing the world are so big and so many!
Perhaps I should write to my MP about issues of concern that are in the hands of government. - BUT will he/she even read it?
Perhaps I should join a protest march - BUT what's the point, especially when marches involving tens of thousands don't seem to make a difference?
Perhaps I should stop following the news and shut all the nasty noise out. BUT isn't that selfish escapism? I'm reminded of the quote attributed to Edmund Burke, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
So, How can I make a difference in such a troubled world?
I think the answer may well be different by each individual, and perhaps its best left that way!
One way I'm trying to make a difference is through my art. I've been watercolour painting for pleasure for over 40 years. When I retired in 2018 I began to post paintings online. Some responded with kind comments (or 'likes'). Paintings began to sell. They were giving pleasure to some who like my style. I continue to attempt to capture in paint the beauty in the 'ordinary' of my surroundings.
Art can communicate a 'feel-good' factor. It can lift the heart and give hope. It's not going to stop the wars or injustices we hear of every day. But, hopefully, its contributing something positive, and might be a small way of making a difference to someone's day!
