Finding beauty in the ordinary

My primary goal is to discover beauty in the ordinary and capture it in watercolour paint. You'll notice that I love to paint light and shadow. Watercolour is, to me, the best medium for this.
Latest painting!
I first painted this watercolor over a year ago and put it in my ‘discarded’ paintings pile. I recently found it again, added deeper color and have decided I like it!
I’m entering it for a local exhibition!

This cottage, in the south of the Isle of Man, has fantastic views to the sea and the smaller island, The Calf of Man.

Soon after I retired in 2018, I spent 3 days on the Calf of Man. The weather was beautiful.
As the island is uninhabited (except for a warden) it was very peaceful. The weather was beautiful. As I sat in the heather with a sketchpad, enjoying the quiet, warmth and birdsong (and the occasional seal!), I thought I'd arrived in heaven. This is my latest watercolour (June 2026)😀🙂😀

My latest watercolour painting of Langness Lighthouse (Isle of Man)
As the 2026 TT races take place this week, I have the Isle of Man in mind. Langness Lighthouse is in the south of the island and is in a beautiful setting. I lived a couple of miles from this lighthouse from 2005 - 2012. I loved the walk from home to this peaceful place.

This is the Point of Ayre Lighthouse in the North of the Isle of Man. It's another beautiful setting - remote, peaceful, lots of birdlife in the surrounding area. Nature at its best!

Majuba Mountain (also known as Majuba Hill) is a prominent, historically significant peak in the Drakensberg range in KwaZulu, South Africa.. It is located approximately 14 kilometers southwest of Volksrust and 32 kilometers north of Newcastle, near the border with Mpumalanga.
This painting was requested by a customer for whom this view is of a special place.
Art Journal
In 2024 I started keeping a journal of my art. This started as I kept a record of notes etc when I was completing an art course, ‘Find your joy’ with artist, Louise Fletcher.
When the course ended I continued keeping a record of all paintings I completed, along with notes about them. This video includes pages from the journal.

The paintings arrived safely this morning, very quick delivery. I am very pleased with them, and thanks for the ‘extra’ of Ramsey. Now I just have to get them framed, and then the pleasure of finding somewhere in the house to hang them!
